AI
This one isn't a Hobbes update - more an observation about what I'm seeing, and maybe a call to action.
I left Amazon to build something on my own when I sensed AI was reshaping the landscape. Over the past few weeks that sense has gotten more visceral.
First, people. Jeff Bezos is back at Amazon working on AI. Sergey Brin is back at Google writing code for Gemini. Jony Ive and his design team from Apple is building devices again at OpenAI. Some of the smartest and most accomplished people in the world are working full-time on AI - not to earn a salary, but because the field is so exciting.
Second, technology. The pace is dizzying. The announcements from Google this week were jaw-dropping, especially their video and image models. Building a functional app has never been easier with half a dozen tools and some of the best models. We have gone from what was "virtually impossible" 10 years ago to being able to solve complex problems in less than 2 minutes today.
Third, opportunity. When execution gets cheaper, imagination is the only bottleneck. Small teams can now tackle problems that used to require entire companies. If you follow your curiosity and work at the edge of technology, you can solve problems in ways that weren't possible earlier. Old solutions and business models are becoming obsolete quickly because the frontier has moved.
With Hobbes, I want to build the world's most helpful nutrition coach. Even two years ago, pursuing this would have been either unthinkable or would have required a significant engineering and science team.
So, here's my call to action - I know not everyone can quit their jobs, but consider carving out time to build. Maybe it's evenings for a month, or a two-month sabbatical. Follow your curiosity, build something small, and learn what's possible. There hasn't been a better or easier time to create. You'll return to whatever you're doing full of ideas and enthusiasm.
